It started simple. He ate lunch. Alone. At his desk. Then filed an expense claim for it labeled "team lunch." There was no team. There was no lunch, in the plural sense. There was one man and a tiffin.

Finance rejected it.

A lesser person would fold. He resubmitted — same lunch, slightly reworded description. Finance rejected it again. And instead of accepting defeat, he entered a war of attrition, tweaking the wording each round, testing which phrasing might slip through, filing the same solo meal under an ever-rotating set of euphemisms.

Three months of this. Rejection, resubmission, rejection, resubmission. Finance holds the line. He does not retreat. It's a stalemate with no end in sight and no dignity on either side.

And somewhere along the way it stopped being an expense dispute and became folklore. People check in on it. "Any update on the team lunch guy?" It's a running saga now, a slow-burn office legend about one man's refusal to accept that a solo desk sandwich is not a team event. Honestly at this point I hope he never wins and never quits. The story's too good.
