Work near Hawa Mahal in Jaipur where tourists stop and ask for directions almost daily without fail, usually manage well enough with basic phrases and hand gestures. A German couple once asked how to reach their hotel, and I understood maybe half of what they were actually saying but instead of admitting that, just confidently pointed them off somewhere down the road like I knew exactly where it was. Ten minutes later realized I'd mixed up two roads, actually ran after them through the crowd to apologize and showed the right way properly on Maps this time around, feeling my face go red the whole time.
