For as long as I can remember, every family trip was planned around children. Where we wanted to go, what we wanted to eat, whether we were bored and how much luggage everyone needed. Even after we grew up, my parents rarely travelled alone.

Last month my sibling and I convinced them to take a short trip by themselves. My mother was nervous and my father kept saying it was unnecessary. But the photos they sent were different from usual. They looked relaxed, silly and genuinely happy. My mother later admitted that it was the first time in decades they travelled without being responsible for anyone else.

Has anyone else encouraged their parents to rediscover life as a couple after the children moved out?
