Had an overnight train journey last week and specifically booked a lower berth because I've had some back pain recently. I booked early, chose the preference and luckily got it.
Around 10 PM, a guy in his early 30s came and asked if I could take his upper berth.
I politely said sorry, I'd prefer to keep the lower one.
He said his wife was on the opposite lower berth and they wanted to sit together.
I again said sorry.
Then he asked, “Aapko koi medical problem hai?”
That question caught me off guard.
Do I need to submit an MRI before keeping the seat printed on my ticket?
I just said I wasn't comfortable climbing repeatedly.
He sighed loudly and told his wife, right in front of me, “Aaj kal koi adjust nahi karta.”
For the next hour I felt like I had stolen something from them.
This is what annoys me about “adjust kar lo” culture. Asking is completely fine. But if the other person can't say no without being guilt-tripped, then you weren't really asking.
Was I wrong here?
