Told a Tinder match, early on in the texting, that I was "not really a big drinker." Casual, honest at the time, no agenda. Just setting a vibe.
Cut to the actual date, an hour or so in, and I had somehow, without any conscious thought, ordered two cocktails. Two. Before it hit me what I'd claimed earlier. The words came back to me mid-sip, and the contradiction was already sitting right there on the table in front of me, garnished.
He noticed. Of course he noticed. He didn't say anything directly, didn't call it out or make it awkward. He just raised an eyebrow, slightly, over his own drink. That single, wordless eyebrow said everything: "not a big drinker, huh."
The date continued regardless, just slightly recalibrated. My credibility took a small, cocktail-shaped hit, but we carried on. I decided the most dignified path forward was to simply own the two drinks and never reference the earlier claim again, and to his credit, neither did he. Out loud.
