One of my closest friends has done extremely well financially over the last few years. I'm happy for him, and he has never directly insulted me or shown off intentionally.

Still, our lives have become difficult to connect. His casual dinner suggestions cost what I once spent in a week. His travel plans are beyond my budget and most conversations now involve investments, business contacts or experiences I cannot relate to. I don't think either of us is wrong, but the friendship feels less natural.

Can close friendships survive major income differences, or do people eventually drift toward others living similar lives?
