Somewhere along the way, my friend group started using "no cap" purely ironically, applied to obviously fake or exaggerated statements as a bit. Over time, that became the default mode entirely, layered so deep that sincerity got buried underneath it.
Now, even when someone genuinely means something and adds "no cap" for actual emphasis, it lands as a joke anyway. Nobody can tell the difference anymore, ironic or real, because the phrase has been fully hollowed out by overuse.
This has caused at least three minor miscommunications this month alone. Nobody's willing to be the one to fix the irony problem first, mostly because doing that would mean admitting the bit got too complicated for its own good.
