The flight, the outfit, the gift - all in the same month. It just wasn't possible. And I was too embarrassed to say those exact words to someone I'd known since we were both eighteen and broke together.
So I hid behind "a work commitment." Vague, unarguable, safe. She was disappointed but understanding, which somehow made the lie feel worse.
Then, to make up for it in the only clumsy way I knew how, I sent a gift bigger than I could actually afford. Overcompensated hard. Spent money I didn't really have to soften a lie I told because I didn't have money.
The absurd logic of it still gets me. I couldn't afford to go, so I lied, so then I spent even more to feel less guilty about the lie. If I'd just told her the truth from the start, she'd have understood completely - she of all people would have.
But shame doesn't run on logic. It runs on not wanting the one person who knew you at your poorest to see you're still not okay. So I chose the expensive lie over the free truth, and I've never told her which one it really was.
