After my grandfather retired, he became quiet and withdrawn. He had spent his whole life fixing things, organizing people, and solving problems. Suddenly everyone kept telling him to rest.

So I started bringing him things that weren't really broken. A loose watch strap, a chair I could fix myself, paperwork I already understood. He would complain dramatically and then spend hours helping me. He died last year. My family still jokes that I was helpless around him. I wasn't. I just liked watching him become himself again.
