My father worked a physically demanding job and often came home with dirty clothes. As a teenager, I once saw him near my school and pretended not to notice because some classmates were nearby.
He saw me. I know he did. He never mentioned it. Years later, when I got my first office job, he proudly told everyone what I did. I think about that contrast more than I want to. He was never embarrassed by me, even when I gave him reasons to be.
