After our biggest argument, my husband went to bed early and pretended to be asleep. I knew he was awake because his breathing becomes ridiculously controlled when he fakes sleep. I lay beside him for nearly an hour, equally stubborn, refusing to say anything.
Then I quietly said, "I don't actually want to leave you." His breathing changed immediately, but he still didn't move. The next morning he made tea and apologized without mentioning what I had said. We repaired things slowly. To this day, neither of us has admitted that both of us were awake.
