Every morning, without fail, the "good morning" text goes out between me and my friend. It's automatic at this point, muscle memory. Wake up, unlock phone, send it, receive one back. A tiny daily ritual that runs on pure habit.
Here's the thing though — most days, nothing follows it. No conversation. No "how are you," no plans, no update. Just the two words, sent and received, and then complete silence until the next morning when we do it all over again. It stopped being an actual conversation months ago, if it ever really was one.
And yet neither of us has ever dropped it. Not once. There's no reason to keep sending it, no content behind it, no expectation of a reply beyond the mirror-image "good morning" coming back. But skipping it would feel wrong somehow, like breaking a streak that isn't even tracked anywhere.
So it continues. A completely empty gesture that's also, weirdly, the most reliable thing in both our days. We don't talk. We just confirm, every single morning, that the other person is still there. Turns out that's enough to keep it going indefinitely.
