When I was in college, my father's business went through a terrible period. One evening I saw my mother leaving a jewellery shop with an envelope. I immediately understood what she had done because the bangles she wore every day were gone. At home, she casually said she had put them somewhere safe because they were becoming loose.

I knew she was lying, and she knew I probably knew, but neither of us said anything. Years later, after I started earning, I bought her a similar pair. She smiled and said they were too expensive and unnecessary. I wanted to tell her I remembered everything, but for some reason I couldn't. She still doesn't know that those missing bangles are one of the main reasons I became obsessed with financial security.
